First Canning Experience-

So we had a fun weekend last weekend and went to a local farm to pick strawberries. We now have to go back to pick more! We picked 6 gallons! I didn’t get many pictures, we were having too much fun!

These are out eating strawberries! A bunch went into the freezer for pies and smoothies later! Or bread or whatever I happen to want to make!

These are my jam strawberries. 2 full gallon bags went into the freezer, I didn’t have the energy to make it all. So we will be making more soon

This is Tooty’s slicer! I bought it from my Avon Lady, since Tooty loves strawberries and wants to do everything herself! She just chats and chats while she slices them, it is comical! And adorable!

It makes such even slices, and my 6 year old has no trouble using it!

So hubby and I decided to make some jam that night! I didn’t get much pictures, it was my first canning experience, and I had such a good time! I have never tried this recipe, and can I say it is amazing! I am so glad I made it!

It takes 5 and a half cups of crushed strawberries, so I still have plenty of more strawberries to use and make some more. This recipe made 9 and a half jars of jam! Every jar popped! I was so happy! I will have to take more pictures for next time! Hubby was boiling jars to sterilize and keep hot while I was making the jam. It does require constant stirring! Tip- Remember hot canning things need to go into hot jars!

I had such fun, and can’t wait to can some more now! The mess I can say is worth it, but it was a LOT of dishes!

Have you canned anything yet?

Garden Update

There is cucumber, sweet pepper, okra, cantaloupe, pumpkin, watermelon, and sunflower seeds growing in here!

Fava seedlings! These are from Mike the Gardener, and I am so excited to have Hannibal Lector’s food!

The cherry tomato plant is budding and has lots of tomatoes!

I don’t know but if you look really hard, this one is starting to grow some tomatoes too!

wp-1493689711718.jpgMy summer squash plant is going well! It has some small squash starting!

I nursed the cucumber back to health and have to work on it a little more! But it is growing great!

Break time! And I absolutely love my Bogs, but now I need a shorter slip on pair!

Hubby used the tiller and tilled my garden spot! We went back over it and added some manure, 7 bags to be exact! My compost is not ready yet, and we have soil made of clay. this was before the rain hit- so we now have to loosen it back up so I can plant the seedlings and direct sow some more.

Don’t mind my snowflake lights- I have some front porch work to do! I bought the basket at Lowe’s, and we bought some flowers, because the girls love having them, and who doesn’t love a pretty front porch? The other blue hanger- which you can’t see that well, is one I bought off Wish- it has a hole for drainage, and the bottom has a space to keep the soil from coming out! I placed some of our flowers in there.

This will be moved up front after we get the seeds planted in the garden. The pallet holds my plant hangers beautifully! I bought those off Wish as well! I think they are colorful and pretty! The strawberries went into the purple hanger- which matches the blue, and the green is the other strawberry seeds we started- one plant is trying to grow!

I love bright colors if you can’t tell! Teal, any shade of purple and lime green! These are my plants I got from Tractor Supply- there is a banana pepper plant, a watermelon plant, 2 okra plants, a red bell pepper, a green bell pepper, another summer squash, another cucumber, and another tomato. I am going to try my hand at container gardening!

Here is my potato planter, another buy from wish. It has 3 different potato seeds in it. I can’t wait to see how they grow and then fill this up! As they grow, we continue to place more soil, and then when it reaches the top, we can unbury it all!

How is your garden doing? Tips, tricks, comments! I love them all! Questions- ask away! How do you think my Garden is doing? Opinions are accepted- I do well with constructive criticism!

To what to my wandering eyes should appear…

But a peach tree!

So there has been this little tree growing on our property line, and I kept trying to figure out what it was. Well this weekend the neighbor was mowing his grass and stopped by- we advised him we were about to plant some pecan trees. He told us this was a peach tree, I didn’t even know it had buds! I am so excited and beside myself! How frickan awesome! I am going to have to stabilize it so it will grow straight and mulch, clean up under it a bit. It honestly looked just like a stick in the ground the whole time we lived here! I just left it there to see what would grow, and I am so glad I did! I just wonder how it got there! How awesome!

Garden Update-

So I was not able to till or get anything into the ground- major work to be done next weekend now!

the 11 plants I bought are doing well- but they need more room soon!

The squash plant is getting flowers!

Mr. Cucumber plant is doing much better now! I am so happy- it is growing and blooming!

Tomato plant is doing well and flowering!

Can you see the cherry tomatoes already?

Looks like out of this seed batch- the corn has started growing. Or at least I think it is the corn- I forgot to label the front of the box so I could tell!

Starting from the top left and going down rows- then over from the top again-

Okra, Okra, Cantaloupe, cantaloupe, green bean (they are small), nothing yet, nothing yet, pumpkins, a whole row of nothing yet, nothing yet, nothing yet, sweet pepper, sweet pepper, cucumber, and 3 nothing yet, 2 nothing yet, sunflower, and the last nothing yet.

I am so excited to transplant them into the bigger garden space and then see how much I can get to grow!

How does your garden grow?

Chick Update..

As of right now, I am having good luck with my babies. I have 3 Cherry Eggers and 3 Golden Comets. The big girls are quite curious to see them through the fencing. I think next weekend we will try mixing them to see.

They are beautiful- and coming into their colors now. I still have yet to name them, we may soon, but I am waiting to be able to tell a difference between all of them! They look the same!

Violet and Spaz- Violet is more curious about the chicks than Spaz.

We put the babies up at night and let them down- but this morning- this lone Cherry Egger made her way down the ramp. I was worried they wouldn’t learn how to. So I watched all morning- she made her way up and down.

I came back out later and all 6 were down! Let’s just see if they learn to go up at night. We are having some rain and it is chilly so I bet they will since we still have the heat lamp up for them.

So I am taking suggestions for names! Comment and let me know what you think!

The beginnings…

We planted some seeds this past weekend. I am hoping to plant some more this weekend. This was just the beginning. I am late on the bandwagon, but we are hopping along!

This is my strawberry plant. We bought a package that is supposed to have 10 seedlings in it- but they were all bunched up- and I couldn’t tell one root from another. So if you have any tips to separate them, now is a good time! I have planted it in hopes once they grow, I can separate them further.

My mom had bought my girls these seed starters- so we planted them- and I can’t wait to see them grow, so we can strategically place them. Save the bugs my friends! The one on the left is chamomile, and the one on the right is purple coneflower.

We also have some basil started in it’s own little greenhouse. If it all sprouts, I will have plants to share with friends!

This is Tooty’s planter, she picked up from Walmart one time. We have sweet peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes. I am hoping these do well for her sake!

I will be sure to keep everyone updated with the progress. Talking about progress, here is some updated pictures of our bulbs we planted. Gorgeous!!

A little Spring- but some more cold weather..

I was so excited this past weekend- even though we had rain- that it was warmer out. But then..dun dun duh- it got cold again! Blast this cold weather! It needs to decide what it is going to do- and being warmer is my choice.

So the garden plans are still being made- and we have a little work to prepare. We will probably be planting some seeds this weekend. But the bulbs that the girls and I planted in October are blooming! I hope this cold weather does not kill them! I can’t wait to see the rest come in! We are going to be working on that bed this weekend. So enjoy- I can’t wait for the warmth and the pretty flowers and gardening full stream begin!

This bucket has tulips and should have the iris. I can’t wait to see their colors!

This bucket has the tulips and daffodils! How pretty!

Do you have any green or pretty colors in your neck of the woods?
